A British medical examiner has confirmed that iconic fashion designer Lee “Alexander” McQueen died of asphyxiation and hanging, cementing rumors that his death last Thursday was due to suicide.
According to the coroner official, McQueen’s body was found hanging in his wardrobe in his London apartment the day before the funeral of his mother, Joyce, was to take place.
“At about 10:30am last Thursday… a man was found hanging in his wardrobe at Flat 1, Green Street, London, W1,” the medical examiner’s official Lynda Martindill said in a statement to the Westminister Coroner Court.
“On Monday, Feb. 15, he was identified as Lee Alexander McQueen.”
His older sister Janet McQueen was called in to identify the body, and a suicide note left by the designer has been turned over to the coroner as part of the investigation.
