Adam Lambert’s AMA Show: Kissing, Crotch Grabs, Falls & Fingers

November 23rd, 2009

If Adam Lambert wanted to close Sunday night’s (November 22) American Music Awards with a bang, then he did it!  The American Idol runner up kissed a boy, grabbed his crotch, fell over and flipped the bird in his 4 minutes on stage!

  1. Belinda Says:

I wasn't offended – that was nothing and it's just 'theater'. It was, however, a tad cheesy and 'Look at me, I'm going to be controversial'. But I'll watch it again later – might change my mind.

  2. Jackie Says:

You said if we didn't like last night's performance that it's …"a form of discrimination and a double standard," considering that for decades, "women performers have been pushing the envelope."

Adam, that's total BS!! IMHO I believe it's been way too over the top for BOTH male and female. It's just not my form of entertainment. Keep it in the bedroom!!!!

  3. steve s Says:

Absolutely disgusting….I was outraged watching and will email ABC..

  4. Lee Says:

Lighten up….it's show biz & for a first time on an awards show, with lots of seasoned performers….he was fine. He was under a LOT of pressure & had the guts to do something new, risky & sexually explicit, while singing. I wished there was more singing, but the AMA's are like an extended Vegas show.

  5. cock Says:

what a joke maybe next year they will let him go naked

  6. Unimpressed Says:

Bad taste comes from people of all sexual preferences. Thanks, Adam, for showing that gay people can be just as tasteless as the straight ones.

  7. Sickened Says:

So sad that he is so perverted and much of the public will love it. It was a new low for music and tv award shows. I'm done.

  8. Suzy Q Says:

he's a joke. Im glad he fell, it made the performance easier to watch once i was laughing. it is amazing how he thinks he is rock royalty already. What a mess…

  9. LittleL Says:

    I bet his Mama's proud.

  10. Cindy Says:

Its hilarious that there wasnt this kind of response when Britany and Madonna kissed, its so much easier to accept women than men, get over it people its just for entertainment.

  11. celtcwrtr Says:

i think we’re a nation of prudes with a double standard. the fact that we are blasé about and accept mind-numbing visuals regarding appalling violent images yet squirm at the sexual – except for those which may very well be rooted in misogyny – speaks volumes.

the network had to know exactly what he was up to. he may have thrown a curve ball with that kiss, so what? the rest was choreographed to the finest detail, there were pictures all over the internet in the days leading up to the show with those costumes, was likely repeatedly rehearsed, and he’s been giving interviews that practically spelled out what he direction he was going.

to entertain us. and maybe make us think.

  12. David Says:

I will never buy his album anyway. It is more a screamer then a singer and disgusting.

  13. GemmaDine Says:

Um, i don't care if he's gay or whatever he is, but i think someone needs to tell him that he Can NOT 'sing' and my cat in heat sounds better than him anytime!

  14. deb Says:

There WAS this kind of response with the Britney/ Madonna kiss – I guess people have short memories. Recently Miley Cyrus was blasted for briefly dancing next to a pole as part of a performance – people claimed it was a stripper pole dance although it seemed quite innocent to me. And that whole thing with Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl- people carried on about that for weeks! It's just a distraction to drag sexual orientation into this. Crude is crude and that performance was crude. His performance ceased being entertaining when people started feeling uncomfortable and offended.

  15. hockeymom Says:

So Adam's gay, we all get it, it's 2009, gay doesn't shock us anymore. His performance was career suicide.

  16. Open Mind Says:

I recall the Ed Sullivan Show not allowing the Doors to sing the lyrics to a few of their songs. Nothing new here, just a few decades later with the same Church Lady censors on the button once again. Can't believe the ceosorship of art has raised it's ugly head again in this country. We get to watch murders and worse on TV every day, but anything regarding sex seems to taboo in the U.S. Very Red Neck and sad Country we live in that seems to lust for power and Wars, but shuns the expressions of Love and natural human emotions.

  17. Dagmar Says:

    Dear Adam!
You are so gifted I used your song Mad world at my Dads Funeral and everyone agreed that you where the best thing next to Ice Cream.
What I dont understand is why you could not remain faboulous with class you dont have to push your sexuality this hard we know who you are and if you are secure it is not a nessesity to behave like that.
There are a lot of straight older people such as your grandparents which are from the old school and they would be hurt to see you this way.you are a wonderful talented artist why not keep it real and cater to everyone not just the outrages and gay world. My best friends are gay so thats why Im writing to you everyone waited for your new album and your debute jet in the news your where not even mentioned people seem to wanted to forget about it.
So stay true to your gift of singing and dont get sidetracked with your sexuality one has nothing to do with the other everyone knows you are gay so you dont have to reinforce it.
A fan that routed for you the entire time on Idol.
    Best Regards
    Dagmar

  18. Carly Says:

I'm still having to think about this one. I literally stayed up for hours after the show and tried to examine how I felt about it. I've always prided myself on being open minded and intelligent. I have always had a problem with close minded people. But that said I was uncomfortable. This guy at times makes me really uncomfortable. Then I have to figure out why he makes me uncomfortable. There are a lot of gay actors, singers etc in Hollywood. I have gay friends so my discomfort has nothing to do with his sexuality or then again maybe it does. Maybe he's right and there is a double standard among men and women. I've never really explored that issue. I know women do it all the time. Female pop artists are way over the top in their sexuality. They are up their hanging it all out for show and simulating boy on girl and girl on girl sexuality all the time. I'm thinking it's because I'm not used to seeing it. I see the girl on girl sexuality on tv, in performances etc but this is a first for me. I'll have to think about this. I'm almost speechless or worldless.

  19. Michy Gonzales Says:

Hey FUCKING ADAM!!! Lokk at the comments of the peoiple —> "a career suicide' + "someone needs to tell him that he Can NOT 'sing' and my cat in heat sounds better than him anytime!" + "he's a joke" + "Absolutely disgusting….I was outraged watching and will email ABC.. " … AND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE —> "what a joke maybe next year they will let him go naked " … !!!!

  20. Elena Minson Says:

    SO FUCKING GROSS!!!!

  21. dave Says:

yeah – i think he blows, and i don't care who. what a boring song and i wasn't entertained- even tho he kept screan=ming that's what he was here for.. B-O-R-I-N-G.

  22. Maria B. Says:

Adam Lambert is a gifted artist. It's so important to use your celebrity wisely. Adam is 27 years old and my husband and I often wondered why he hadn't been "discovered" yet. I think last night's performance might explain that now. If that display was an example of Adam's "artistic license", then we understand why he hasn't been picked up by a major label before this. If the performance was influenced by his present advisers, he needs to be mindful of who he's listening to. I know my daughter still wants go out and buy his CD today. I have reservations about the message Adam is sending out as a role model, though.

  23. Patty M Says:

It is too bad Adam has so much talent and feels he has to be gross in order to get noticed. He screamed his song and grossed everyone out. He did not have to lower himself to such a cheezy performance. I saw him on the American Idol tour and he was fabulous. I will not be fan from this point on. He has made his performance about sex insteady about his musical ability. Pitty!!!

  24. Susan Says:

As an early devoted fan of Adam's, I truly question his direction after last nights outrageous performance. His voice was squeaky and squeally. It didn't look like him or sound like him. Drop the heavy sexuality, Adam. You really were distasteful and I was embarassed for you. You could have stole the show. You gave it away to all the other class acts that came before you. Smarten up before we no longer wait up to see you.

  25. Sjs999 Says:

There is a way to either leave the room or change the channel.

  26. Marie Says:

Adam- you say you are not the poster child for any particular thing- it is about the music. So, why in the world would you do such an outlandish performance on national tv. I think you have a magnificent voice and I could listen to you all day, but I would have to think really hard about going to one of your concerts–the visuals don't work for me. Ditto for a woman doing the same thing.

  27. susan strausbaugh Says:

It is pretty important for him to sing……not to immediately straighten out our cultural insecurities…….he is awesome and I hope his new album supports his brilliance or he may be in trouble. I am a bit of a rare breed but I too thought the fingering and kissing was way out place for the occasion…….which was to honor people. Ask JZ what he thought……or Oprah. We know nothing about their sex lives but when in public, they act with decorum so that everyone in their presence is comfortable. That is respect. Adam was disrespectful to the honorees and to attendees.

  28. anne Says:

I completely agree with Susan–love Adam's talent, and don't mind the outrageous as long as there's some artistry involved, but nothing about that performance worked last night. In order to provoke and make people think about "double standards", they have to be able to watch you first. CHEESY! and I don't mean that in the good-campy way. But, Adam, you've got time to do much better things that you've proven yourself capable of.

  29. Toni Says:

Well I had planned to buy Adam's CD today. If that is what is on it—It sounded like he was screaming through the song. I guess if he prefers to sing rather than use that AWESOME voice on his album. I wish him luck because he just lost a fan . His sexuality is not an issue. Bad taste is

  30. Jackie Says:

I also had plans to buy Adam's CD today, thanks Adam for saving me some money in these hard times. I've been counting the days for your album to be released. I loved you on American Idol, I was embarrassed for you last nite. What were you thinking?? Where was your talent? If you had sung the 2012 song…this morning you would have been golden. Maybe you should have been given the job of announcer and Chris should have sung! As a statement, I'm not buying your CD.

  32. Adam istoast Says:

    bravo

  33. Adam is toast Says:

SO WHAT?? do you have kids? obviously you don't mind participating in the destruction of kids minds

  34. Adam is finished Says:

He is done, his screeching got old within a few weeks of idol, he is simply gross, I think his "career started and ended" last night. He will cry Discrimination if his whatever you call what he did last night is edited, get a life you baby! DEAL WITH IT!

  35. BETTY Says:

    BETTY

HOW DID ABC LET THIS HAPPEN, I'LL NEVER WATCH THE AMA AWARDS. SURE GLAD HE DIDN'T WIN AMERICAN IDOL. HIS PERFORMANCE WAS DISGUSTING , DISTASTEFUL, SICKENING. WE KNOW HE IS GAY SO WHY RUB IT IN OUR FACES. ABC YA KNOW CHILDREN WATCH THE AWARDS ALSO. SHAME ON YOU ADAM LAMBERT, WON;T BY YOUR ALBLUM

  36. bethany Says:

ok people its jus a show! get over it. so what if it was more than a little vulgar. thats him and hes throwing out something new instead of being another one thats jus gonna do as others do or does what people tell him too! hes throwing his own personality into it and hes not ashamed to show it and i respect him for that!

  37. cindy Says:

Idon't get it…..I work for a school district and we have soooo many issues with kids, and them not having anyone to look up to. THen we have people like Adam Lambert that has no respect for anyone…..your performance was like watching prostitution live on TV. Absolutely no class at all. THis has nothing to do with him being gay. Gay is very accepted anymore. THis is all about being the "talked about performer". He won't last! ABC should be ashamed of themselves for always calling themselves a family channel and then allowiing this performance. Many would say "turn it off you don't like it"…who was expecting all that!? Those who say "lighten up"…..I am…but work in a school, or in a detention hall and see how kids are behaving..these types of things don't help…..tryng to teach our kids respect is difficult when you have assholes like this that think they are untouchable or "rock royalty". IT's a shame that many of you are as shallow and selfish as Lamber.

  38. Vanessa Says:

I hope that Adam's career crashes and burns. He's got no business earning money from his freakish porn show performances. Now everyone knows why he should have lost American Idol. He didn't sound that great on the AMA awards anyway. He's such a classless, perverted idiot.

  39. janet fan Says:

I was shocked because I haven't heard any flack from some of his antics but Janet got dissed bad at the Super Bowl. IDK.????

  40. dontcarenow Says:

Yep his career is likely already on the downhill slide. I thought he sounded great on Idol (when he didn't scream hitting high notes)…I don't believe in homosexuality, but don't bash those who are, but there was no need for that display. He was too concerned about shocking us and making it a memorable performance but it backfired…I think we witnessed career suicide.Thik of the the parents now who will not let their kids buy his CD…I agreed with another poster that sais this guy already thinks he's rock royalty…Far from it dude- I completely lost respect for him after seeing that display.

  41. Rational Says:

I find it interesting that some people call others close-minded for objecting to Lambert's so called art. When sexuality is used to explore issues thoughtfully and skillfully, it might be art. When it's used to merely titillate, it isn't. Lambert's performance was in bad taste. Just because I think so doesn't make me close-minded, it means I have morals. Lambert was trying so hard, it was ridiculous. Here's the problem as I see it: Americans are confused about sexuality. A tasteful painting of a nude could hang in McDonald's for all I care, portraying negative images with sexuality should not be on family television. Put it on MTV or record a dvd of it and sell it. I hope Lambert crashes and burns. He totally sucked last night anyway

  42. Was a Fan Says:

Adams gig last night on the AMA’s was like Christians screaming at you in a public area, holding signs saying ‘HELL WAITS FOR YOU,TURN OR BURN’ ….. it is cramming GOD down our throats.

That approach only turns people away right?

Adams approach last night had the same vibe….CRAMMING IT DOWN OUR THROATS, so to speak. (no pun intended)

I liked him on Idol. I was curious and interested to hear his debut CD. Alot of build up for the CD. NOW??? not a chance. Not going to buy it, nor listen to it, nor let my kids see the performance we taped so they could see him. Disgusting, and I don’t care about him being gay, I was really hoping to see him make his mark on musicdome……instead he was just plain dumb.

Get your resume’ ready Adam, McDonalds is hiring.

  43. Gee Says:

    Huh?

  44. Lawzee Says:

Believe Ozzie Osborn and Alice Cooper were among the enemies of most older folks back in their days. Alice Cooper once said, my act pretains to everything parents despise. The kids all love me for that, as their parents hate what I represent, and that sells tickets my friends. ____Open your eyes to today's younger generation. Most have accepted human sexuality as normal, no matter what gender. Way back in the 1950s this type of performance was a shocker, Elvis Pelvis censorship, It is now almost 2010. Would believe that most of these comments against this performance must be coming from Rual America and not the major cities.____ED SULLIVAN – Doors ~ Light My Fire – Controversial lyric "Girl We Couldn't Get Much Higher" __Same kinda deal with Adam and the kiss and his song. Amazing how some people just cannot accept things in the U.S. Strange place. ____"Read on wikipedia that Ed Sullivan told Jim Morrison to change his lyrics when he sings "girl we coudn't get much higher"? to girl we coudn't get much better. Turns out he didn't do it and Ed got pissed and never invited him back."

  45. History Lesson Says:

"Alice Cooper claims 'Chicken Incident', at Toronto Rock and Roll Revival Sept 1969, was an accident. A chicken made its way on stage during Cooper's performance; not having experience around farm animals, Cooper picked it up and threw it out over the crowd, expecting it to fly away; the bird instead plummeted into the first few rows of the crowd occupied by disabled people in wheelchairs, who reportedly proceeded to tear the animal to pieces."

The next day, the incident made the front page of many national newspapers, and Zappa phoned him to ask if the story, which reported that Cooper had bitten the head off the chicken and drunk its blood on stage, was true. Cooper denied the rumor, whereupon Zappa told him, "Well, whatever you do, don't tell anyone you didn't do it", Based on that story, there is no telling what the stories will grow into regarding Adam's act on AMA program. LOL

  46. Elanore Says:

Just goes to show ya that the human imagination works much better than High Definition Television!

  47. Open Mind Says:

Most the people complaining about Adams' Act are Fat Ugly Female Breeders.

They have always been jealous of cute gay boys.

  48. Chris Says:

Wow Adam u really hurt me. Im so disappointed. I loved this guy. I called him the next "Freddy Mercury" (lead singer for Queen), but he performed more like a male version of "Lady Ga Ga"n (very theatrical & unecessary).. He performed so well on American Idol (I recall his soulful performance of "tracks of my tears" by Smokey Robinson) but I agree that this was "career suicide". I feel that a nice 4 piece band w/ Adam singing lead would be awesome. Hard rock and metal are his genre. Alternative pop will never work. Im going to listen to his albulm. If it sux as bad as his performance im giving up on Adam Lambert…..

  49. anearformusic Says:

Absolutely revolting. I turned the Music Awards show off at the first song with Janet Jackson holding her crotch. I'm glad I did.

  50. Susan Says:

Okay so you're GAY big deal! Entertaining us doesn't mean you have to be out of control. I loved Adam all through American Idol he was my top choice! Gay or not he has unbelievable talent! But doesn't have to waste it on trying to be over the top. We can be entertained without all the sexuality.

  51. MP3 Says:

Every form of entertainment has to have a Face and a Heal to survive. In today's giant society with Billions of people on Earth, should one split that crowd down the middle that leaves 1/2 liking the act. 1/2 of over a Billion still ain't bad.

How many viewers watched his performance on TV, versus how many will watch it online? And more than once or a dozen times with today's technology. Back in the day, all one got was that instant on TV, then came Beta, then VCR, then Hard Drives, then DVD, then Flash Drives. The performances today are caputred, copied and re-copied a thousand times over in an instant.

Believe the sales of his new album/dvd/cd/MP3 what ever the new format is, will tell the tale. I predict it will be huge!

  52. Heather Says:

LOL…attention whoring has reached a new level. That was the cheesiest performance ever. It was like watching a two year old run around frenetically proving how naughty he can be. I'm still laughing my ass off today. Oh, the song, the cheesy makeup, costumes, and choreography. Good heavens, what a mess! I couldn't care less whether he is gay or straight. He just sucks.

  53. hushicho Says:

Yeah, so kissing is 'gross' now? I wonder how many of you are middle-aged shut-ins…

Seriously, either get in touch with what's going on, or don't bother to post defamatory comments about an altogether not that ribald — and certainly not 'sexually explicit' performance. He didn't engage in sexual intercourse with anyone. He wasn't naked. Nobody showed anything or else it wouldn't be on television. It was merely suggestive.

Funny how you seem not to care or comment about the female artists doing pretty much exactly the same thing and the heteronormative ones promoting that, but when a male performer kisses another male performer, scandal!

Get with the times. Stop whining like you think someone cares.

  54. miss frank Says:

i've lost all respect for him as an artist. i mean, if he would've done this on a late night show i probably wouldn't be as upset but the fact that kids were watching this…that's just wrong. i wish he would've got hurt during the fall. he's really pathetic.

  55. Was a Fan Says:

Adam had the opportunity to embrace millions upon millions of people with his soulful art. A performance that would appeal to the masses would have given him another notch up, and really catapolted him into the hearts of many. His talent was showcased so well on Idol, the build up and excitement of seeing him close out the AMAs was immense, and he choked. Bad decision Adam, by trying shock the world, you lost a career.

All will be mediocre for you now.

    Ahh, what could have been……

  56. Stephanie Says:

    I agreee!

  57. Stephanie M Says:

Okay, so I absoultly ADORE Adam Lambert. He is amazingly talented, and | could watch him for hours. I loved this song, but I'm afraid that a loud bass and bad back up singers made it horrible. It probably wasn't the best song choice to show off his skill either. BUT I am a little angry at the people who are 'outraged' with the preformance. Get with the program people, it's the 21st century! GUYS CAN KISS GUYS! Good for him for going for it. People need to lighten up a bit. It's just for entertainment.

  58. ket Says:

typical tv bullsh(t…..a so called performer and a bunch of whores on stage. big deal. not interested in him or the amas.

  59. ket Says:

i agree, but please get your cat fixed! thanks

  60. LuLu Says:

He is so cute; but not that cute!!!!!! Im sorry Adam but it seems like your "do you like what you see" is all you got  goin on for ya right now(and now this obviously planed scandle) cause aside from anything else, this preformance sucked! This was the first time I wished sombody would quick turn on the auto-tune…. besides Kanya 's prefomances, but from his last album he caught on to that. Anyways you know I didnt even catch the whole scadalolous dance moves cause I couldnt get over how bad and out of tune this song was to listen to! I was squinting the whole time from the sounds goin on up there. I might check you out more only to figure out were the cute guy from American Idol went to. He must of had some out of tune alien snatch his body(and vocal cords) up; thats the only explination I could think of unfortinatly. Sorry Kidd, the truth hurts just as this preformance "hurt" your career.

  61. LuLu Says:

I dont care what "century" we are in the only entertainment this provided was talking about how bad this preformance was! Even to the blind! I feel sorry for him, this preformance seemed deprate to me. Don' t get me wrong he is still very ADORABLE, but dont you feel a little like he has taken avantage of that fact? Sorry my ears, eyes, and mind feels like if he continues to get the "big bucks" and "celebrity perks" for proformances like this, It just wont be fair to real talent like Susan Boyle(for example). Do you want to see her do all that; and if she souded that bad even once do you think we would be so forgiving? Im just tired of a beutiful thing like music being automaticly associated with "strip teases" in order to sell. Thats how things are and I know that; but I feel modisty should still be considered a vertue and now of days it is something worth speaking up about … thats all.

  62. Lindsey Says:

I didn't not care for the performance at all and not because I am a prude or a child was watching it or I am against gay people or anything but just because I don't like performances like these. That is why I don't go and see people in concert. I don't like anyone (male or female) performing like this on stage. I am not a prude, I just don't care for the suggestive material. Keep that in the bedroom please. Also, if your child was up that late…it's your fault. It is ABC's fault for not pulling the plug which they could have done. It is Adam's fault because he felt as though he needed a ridiculous and raunchy performance to get noticed. I have never cared for Adam and his style of "singing" which to me is just screaming. I don't think it was career suicide…but maybe just a little controversy we will all get over. The world needs to open up more about gays and male on male action. Women do it all the time. Adam-don't lower yourself to standard just to prove a point. It's dumb. Focus on singing first…not sfcreaming. There are a lot less screamer fans than there are singer fans out there in the world. Maybe that is why you lost to Kris Allen on American Idol.

  63. Susanne Says:

Ugh. How did he make it so far on Idol? He can't sing worth a lick. That was like watching something I shouldn't be watching! Double standard nothing. When Madonna and Britney kissed it DID make an uproar. And seeing women do the same is just as tacky. Sensual is one thing. SEX is another. Soon, people having sex onstage won't just be a hidden pleasure. Then, what pleasure is there in it? It's an addiction.

  64. ashley Says:

leave him the fuck alone hes a great performer and also hes fuckin sexy who cares if he kissd a guy get over it

  65. Katie Says:

OMG. Lighten up, guys. He kissed a guy, its not the end of the world. Its not like he f**ked him or something. So, some people weren't okay with it, that's their deal, and sure, he may not have gone about things the right way, but there is no reason for some of the comments I've just read.

At least, in kissing Tommy, Adam wasn't being NASTY!

  66. Katie Says:

I agree. If its so 'disgusting' turn it off. There is no reason to be judgmental and rude about it.
