Noted animal rights campaigner Hayden Panettiere has launched a new clutch range for leathergood’s manufacturer Dooney & Bourke, which is described as being made out of “soft supple Italian calfskin”.

The ‘Heroes’ star, who has been actively protesting the slaughter of dolphins and whales around the world, has put her name to ‘The Hayden Clutch’, which will be part of their Spring ‘09 range.

“I asked if I could design a clutch because it’s something that I’m familiar with because I carry them around all of the time,” Panettiere says.

According to the Dooney & Bourke website, “The clutch is crafted of soft supple Italian calfskin and trimmed with gold leather piping.  It’s dramatic 24 carat gold-plated lion head closure, inspired by Hayden’s astrological sign Leo, adds the perfect accent.”

Heather Carlson, media liaison with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), made the following statement about Hayden’s new project:

“When celebrities get involved with animal rights in any way, we’re happy to work with them. Even if it’s on just one issue. Hayden has been wonderful on issues involving the slaughter of dolphins and whales. We are sure that she’ll extend her concern for abused animals to those less popular, like cows who are skinned for bags and shoes, once she sees our undercover footage, which we’ll be sending to her.”
