Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri was sentenced to 4 and a half years prison on Thursday (October 23), after he pleaded guilty last month to charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering.
According to authorities Follieri led investors to believe he had connections to the Vatican that allowed him access to buy the Catholic Church’s unwanted U.S. real estate at a cheap rate.
In addition, the 29-year-old also allegedly claimed he managed the Vatican’s financial affairs and met with the Pope.
Follieri made a statement to the court via an interpreter saying, “The most important thing I want the court to know is I was not raised with bad values… I started off with good intentions, determined to run an honorable business and make everyone proud of me.”
He added, “What I did was wrong and there is no point in making excuses… I will never be able to wash away the shame… I just hope that someday those who have been hurt by my actions will forgive me.”
Another hearing to determine where Follieri will spend his jail term is scheduled for December 12.
