Despite numerous announcements by his publicist that he was “responding well” to treatment for pneumonia, comedian Bernie Mac passed away on Saturday night (August 9) aged 50.
Danica Smith made the announcement via a statement that read:
“Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago-area hospital. No other details are available at this time. We ask that his family’s privacy continues to be respected.”
The funny man, born Bernard Jeffery McCullough, was admitted to a Chicago hospital on August 1 suffering from pneumonia, with his rep denying several premature reports of his death.
George Clooney paid tribute to his ‘Ocean’s’ co-star saying, “The world just got a little less funny. He will be dearly missed,” while Brad Pitt told E! News, “I lament the loss of a ferociously funny and hardcore family man. My thoughts are with [his wife], Rhonda, and their family. Bernie Mac, you are already missed.”
Fellow comedian Chris Rock paid his respects saying, “Bernie Mac was one of the best and funniest comedians to ever live, but that was the second best thing he did. Bernie was one of the greatest friends a person could have.”
He added, “Losing him is like losing 12 people, because he absolutely filled up any room he was in. I’m gonna miss the Mac Man.”

I feel so sorry about this sad news, he will be deeply missed in Australia. Us Australians loved him so much not only as an actor but also as a funny comedian. I send my deepest love and support to his beloved wife Rhonda, his daughter Je’Niece, his son in law and grand daughter Jasmine, may he rest respectfully and in God’s hands in peace We love you Bernie Mac!!!!!!
