Bernie Mac Remembered By Thousands At Memorial

August 17th, 2008

The memorial for Bernie Mac, who died last weekend (August 10) following a battle with pneumonia, was held in Chicago on Saturday to pay respects to one of the world’s great comedians.

Thousands of fans, friends and family attended the memorial service at the House of Hope church, with the ceremony being a mixture of laughs and tears.

“This dude is a very popular guy,” Cedric the Entertainer told the crowd.  “You know y’all were like ‘let me get four tickets to the funeral!’  He’s still the hottest ticket in town.”

D.L. Hughley joked, “Bernie would wear colors that crayon hadn’t even invented.”

U.S. Presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who couldn’t attend the service, sent his condolences saying, “Michelle and I were so deeply sad to hear about your loss. He [made] us laugh, and laugh hard. Bernie Mac will be sorely missed.”

A rep for Mac announced on August 1 that the comedian was hospitalized with pneumonia but was expected to make a full recovery, however, his condition worsened and he passed away last Saturday night (August 9).

“Between birth and death is a dash,” Rev. Jesse Jackson told the congregation.  “But between that dash between birth and death, he made a statement.”
