Hollywood’s golden couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, have donated $1 million to charity to support children affected by the war in Iraq.
A statement released by the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict on Wednesday (June 25) said the money will “support the education of 8,000 young people from both the United States and Iraq impacted by the recent conflict.”
“These educational support programs for children of conflict are the best way to help them heal,” Jolie said in the statement.
Pitt adds, “We hope to encourage others to give to these great organizations.”
The couple’s donation will be split, with $500,000 going to the Armed Services YMCA Operation Hero Program to help those children who have a parent serving in Iraq, or for those that may have lost one, to help maintain tutoring, counseling and support.
Additionally, $500,000 will be split between Women For Women International to sponsor 300 Iraqi woman and up to 1,200 children; The International Rescue Committee to support the rebuilding of schools and provide accelerated learning programs and NineMillion.org/UNHCR to make uniforms and school supplies for Iraqi children displaced by the war.
