Dr. Phil has reportedly reached out to troubled popstar Britney Spears while the singer was checking out of hospital on Saturday (January 5), following her ordeal Thursday night where she refused to hand over custody of her children to Kevin Federline.
The television doctor released a statement to Entertainment Tonight about his time with the 26-year-old, saying, "My meeting with Britney and some of her family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention. She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car. I am very concerned for her."
Dr. Phil says he is planning on dedicating time to Spears’ condition this week on his show.
However, gossip website TMZ is refuting the story, saying that Dr. Phil did not walk Britney to her car or spend an hour with her at the hospital.
According to their report, "Britney did not invite him in; she didn’t even know he was coming… When he walked into her room, we’re told, a blindsided Britney walked out – and eventually came back.
"Phil tried speaking with Spears for about 15 minutes… but she wanted none of it… As for walking with her to the car on her way out… she absolutely was not accompanied by him."
TMZ states that they attempted to contact a representative from the ‘Dr. Phil’ show, only to be told that "Dr. Phil met with Ms. Spears at family members’ invitation."
