Britney Spears Fights K-Fed’s $500,000 Legal Bill

March 10th, 2008
Britney Spears and her ex-husband Kevin Federline are locked in a dispute over Federline’s mounting legal bills to do with their ongoing custody battle.

The singer’s attorney, Stacy Phillips, claims that Federline’s attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, is being over-paid, after Spears was ordered to pay her ex-husband’s $500,000 legal bill.

Phillips says that Kaplan is charging Federline $1,200 per hour for his and an associate’s services, believes a more reasonable figure would be between $150,000 to $175,000.

"If he (Federline) is willing to tip someone $2,000," Phillips told the Commissioner, "then he should be willing to pay the lawyer bills. Mr. Federline needs to take responsibility for the very diligent work they do on his behalf."

Court spokesperson Allan Parachini said in a statement that "the judge has taken the fees arguments under consideration."

Meanwhile, Spears has been granted a debit/credit card with a limit of $1,500 per week, following a judge ruling to allow the popstar to "have her freedom" while remaining under the conservatorship of her father, Jamie.

Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz granted Spears – who decided not to make an appearance at the hearing – access to the small weekly amount from her fortune.

"Even though it is clear that Ms. Spears is aware of these hearings and chose not to appear, I am holding this hearing as it is neccessary in her absence to prevent harm to her," the Commissioner explained.

Mr. Spears’ lawyer, Geraldine Wyle, said that the allowance was "so she can spend money, have her freedom, and make choices about how she wants to enjoy her life."
