UPDATE: The driving without a license case against Britney Spears was declared a mistrial on Tuesday (October 21), after jurors failed to agree that the singer was guilty.
Spears was facing up to six months in jail and a $1000 fine over the incident that occurred in August 2007, where she hit a parked car and was carrying a Louisiana license, not a Californian one as required.
Following eight hours of deliberation and five votes, the jury was locked 10-2 in favor of an acquittal, with Spears attorney, Michael Flanagan, calling the mistrial “an 80 percent victory,” as prosecutors could call for a retrial.
Los Angeles Court Judge James Steele dismissd the jurors after hearing testimonies from only three witnesses, with her father Jamie testifying that Louisiana was still considered her home.
“Britney knows where she regards home,” Flanagan said during the trial. “She has told [her father]. She doesn’t want to be here.”
“She is a Louisiana girl – born there, lived here and going back there as soon as she gets things straightened out here.”
UPDATE:
Judge Steele has dismissed the case outright with Spears not having to face any further charges.
