US president George W. Bush has postponed an event scheduled to occur on Wednesday (January 23) following the death of Australian actor Heath Ledger, in which President Bush was scheduled to promote a campaign to prevent prescription drug abuse, with a White House rep saying that it was "better to postpone" the event than risk appearing "opportunistic".
Ledger died of an apparent drug overdose from prescription medication on Tuesday (January 22) in New York. The investigation into his passing, including the cause of death, is continuing.
According to The Associated Press, Bush was to make the statement about the new television campaign from the Office of National Drug Control Policy, following the release of a study that revealed that teenage abuse of prescription painkillers is shockingly high.
Dan Perino, the press secretary for the White House released a statement about the delay, saying, "We thought it would be better to postpone the event rather than run the risk of anyone thinking we were being opportunistic in highlighting the issue."
