Carla Bruni Nude Pic Sold For 20 Times Expected Price

April 10th, 2008

A photo of French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy standing naked in a sultry pose – while covering her modesty with her hands – sold today in New York for more than 20 times its expected selling price.

A buyer for a Chinese art collector paid US$91,000 for the black-and-white image, Christie’s auction house said.

The image was snapped by photographer Michel Comte in 1993, during the height of Bruni-Sarkozy modelling career. The sale of the photo has attracted much attention since Bruni married French President Nicolas Sarkozy in February.

The photo, which was auctioned as part of a sale of 140 photos from German collector Gert Elfering, had been expected to sell for between US$3,000 and US$4,000.

An Avedon portrait of 50s and 60s French screen siren Brigitte Bardot also sold well above expectations, when a buyer paid US$181,000 for the image. It had been expected to sell for between US$80,000 and US$120,000.
