The truth comes out! Casey Affleck has confirmed that I’m Still Here is in fact a mockumentary and that Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix was just playing a role when he announced he was retiring from acting last year in order to become a rapper.
Even Phoenix’s bizarre appearance on David Letterman was a fake, with Affleck calling the whole affair “the performance of his [Phoenix's] career”.
“It’s a terrific performance,” Affleck told the New York Times in a recent interview.
“It’s the performance of his career.”
Affleck also revealed that Letterman was not in on the joke when Phoenix gave his infamous 2009 non-interview – so it will be interesting to see how the veteran talk show host reacts when he interviews Phoenix again o n September 22.
The movie has received plenty of negative reviews – including one from Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan who described it as either “a sad and horrifying cautionary tale” or “a glum and dispiriting counterfeit of reality” – which Affleck is putting down to audience confusion over how they were meant to react to supposed documentary footage of an obnoxious, overweight, drug-abusing Phoenix.
“The reviews were so angry,” Affleck admits about I’m Still Here‘s poor critical reception.
“[But] I never intended to trick anybody. The idea of a quote, hoax, unquote, never entered my mind.”

Can't wait to see this movie, I was shattered when he had announced he was retiring. It all just seemed so wonderfully bizarre.

Total BS, he is only saying that because he is a moron letting an addict carry on like that, it is VERY REAL. Just ask Ditty, he just said that. And I did see the film, it is not hoax. Casey is an a-hole to let his "brother" go down like this on camera. He should have committed his "brother" to a rehab program. What is next? His death on camera? He needs serious help with his ego / drug problem!!! Casey is pimping out his "brother", so of course he is calling it a hoax.

Plus, if it were a hoax, I don't get it, the film sucks. It's sad really….
