March 24th, 2008

Singer Corinne Bailey Rae’s husband Jason Rae was found dead at the weekend after apparently suffering a drug overdose, police have confirmed.

Rae’s body was found in a Leeds apartment at around 3pm on Saturday 22 March, with a spokesman from West Yorkshire Police confirming that officers were called to a flat in Hyde Park where they found the body.

"At 3.15pm yesterday (Saturday) the body of a 31-year-old man was found at a flat in the Hyde Park area,” the West Yorkshire police spokesperson said.

"A 32-year-old man was arrested for supplying controlled substances and has since been released on police bail."

A post-mortem was reportedly inconclusive, and police are waiting for the results of toxicology tests.

Rae, a saxophonist in the band The Haggis Horns, had been due to play a gig at the HiFi Club in Leeds on Sunday night. The club confirmed that the gig had been cancelled.

EMI, Bailey Rae’s record label, said in a statement, "EMI Records would like to offer its sincere condolences to Corinne Bailey Rae and the Rae family at this tragic time. We ask that the media respects Corinne’s privacy and that of her entire family."
