The day after late Australian actor Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his role in The Dark Knight, a judge has moved to protect his three-year-old daughter, Matilda, from public scrutiny.
“She is not a celebrity. She is a minor child,” Superior Court Judge Luis A Lavin declared at a downtown Los Angeles courtroom.
Judge Lavin made the ruling after lawyers for Matilda’s trust and a Minneapolis-based life insurance company, ReliaStar, announced that they had reached an agreement to settle a lawsuit. It involved a US$10 million life insurance policy that Ledger took out seven months before his death, of which Matilda was the sole benefactor.
Details of the settlement, including the amount Matilda will receive, will be sealed, with Judge Lavin noting that Matilda had “a right to privacy”.
Ledger won the best supporting actor Oscar on Sunday night (February 22) for his performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight. Ldeger’s father Kim, mother Sally and sister Kate accepted the award on his behalf and said they accepted the award on behalf of Matilda.
“We’re very close with Michelle,” Kim said of Matilda’s mom, Brokeback Mountain actress Michelle Williams.
“She’s doing an amazing job with Matilda, and we speak all the time so we’re in constant contact and always will be.”
