David Beckham To Stay With LA Galaxy… For Now

February 15th, 2009

David Beckham is staying with the LA Galaxy for now, after AC Milan failed to meet the Friday (Feb 13) deadline to offer more money to keep the soccer champ in Italy.

Beckham had been on loan to the European team for three months, with Galaxy rejecting Milan’s initial offer to buyout his contract for $6.4 million.

“He will be back here on March 9 and we don’t want to entertain any more conversations now,” Tim Leiweke, chief executive of the Galaxy’s parent company AEG, said. “It is a distraction to [Galaxy Coach] Bruce Arena, the team and the fans, and we move on. That’s the last we’re going to talk about this.”

He added, “I’ve been as courteous and as gracious as I possibly can, out of respect for David, but now it’s time to move on. We need to get David excited about the team we’re building here and about coming back.”

Beckham has made no secret of his wish to remain with AC Milan, revealing during a recent interview, “I have nothing against the Galaxy.  Los Angeles has been a wonderful experience.  But at Milan I have found great players who have been of great help to me.  For the time being, things could not be going better.”
