Demi Moore’s Famous Nude Cover Was Unplanned

February 19th, 2008

Demi Moore has admitted that one of the most infamous magazine covers of all time – in which she appears fully naked and heavily pregnant – was never originally meant to be seen by the public.

The photo that appeared on Vanity Fair’s August 1991 front cover was taken by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, and was intended to portray an “anti-Hollywood, anti glitz” attitude.

The 45-year-old actress has revealed in an interview with V Magazine that the image was initially intended to be for Moore’s private collection.

“Annie had photographed me pregnant with all three (daughters). The shot that ended up being on the front cover of Vanity Fair wasn’t even done for the magazine. It was just for me and our family,” she says.

"Then Annie called, we kind of joked, and I said it would be amazing if they would do this on the cover.”

Since that edition first hit newsstands, the photo has inspired several other pregnant celebrities to flaunt their naked bodies in magazines, including Britney Spears and, most recently, Christina Aguilera in marie claire.

Moore says of the cover, “It did seem to give a little bit more permission to feel sexy, attractive when you’re pregnant… but I really didn’t expect for the response to be what it was. I was pretty shocked.”
