The season 4 debut of ‘Desperate Housewives’ last Sunday (September 30) in the US has caused a stir with Philippine officials, after the character Susan, played by Terri Hatcher, made headlines for insulting the country’s medical education.
The scene involved Susan visiting the doctor, with her practitioner telling her that she may be entering menopause. This prompts Susan to throw a tantrum, saying, "OK, before we go any further, can I check these diplomas? Just to make sure they aren’t, like, from some med school in the Philippines?"
Philippine news agencies were quick to jump on the story, and several officials in the Phillipines condemned the show.
The ABC network and the producers of Desperate Housewives released a statement saying:
"The producers of Desperate Housewives and ABC Studios offer our sincere apologies for any offense caused by the brief reference in the season premiere. There was no intent to disparage the integrity of any aspect of the medical community in the Philippines.
As leaders in broadcast diversity, we are committed to presenting sensitive and respectful images of all communities featured in our programs."
However, government officials in the Philippines are not content with a written statement, and demand that producers show greater remorse for their actions.
Their had been no further word on any possible action at this time.
