Drew Barrymore explains weight loss in Grey Gardens

April 8th, 2009

Grey Gardens actress Drew Barrymore has explained her noticeable weight loss in the film, saying it came down to her being “so fraught with anxiety.”

Barrymore’s weight loss in the film caused some concern for Grey Gardens director Michael Sucsy, who suggested that the actress increase her calorie intake.

“Michael kept chasing me around with food,” The actress tells E!.

“He kept trying to shove quiche in my face and I was like, ‘Why the f—k are you trying to shove quiche in my face?’ He said, ‘The prosthetics aren’t fitting, your fat suit is swimming on you and it’s unhealthy!’”

Barrymore explains, “I got really thin while I was making the movie because I was so fraught with anxiety.”

The 34-year-old actress says the expectations she put on herself were “definitely life-changing for me, ones that absolutely caused physical and mental despair for a long time.”

She explains, “I cared so much about wanting to do a good job on this that I did things I’ve never done before in order to achieve it.”

By this, the actress is referring to how she forced herself into total seclusion for around three months, in order to prepare for the role of recluse ‘Little Edie’. Barrymore explains, “I had no-one to talk to except for Jessica [Lange] and Michael [Sucsy], because I didn’t feel comfortable talking to anybody else about it.”

The actress says she harnessed the experience, saying, “I also wrote on an IBM Selectric typewriter at night and wrote these manifestos about the way I felt.”

Grey Gardens premiers on HBO on April 18.
