Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has canceled plans to tape a series of shows from New York next week, after threats from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) that they would protest at her east coast shows.
DeGeneres has come under fire from the WGA for crossing the picket line and continuing to produce her show, rather than stop in support of the current writers strike that’s crippling the TV and movie industry.
The 49-year-old has paid tribute to her writer’s on the show, and stopped work for one day in support.
Michael Winship, president of the Writers Guild East, was scathing of DeGeneres’ cancellation, releasing a statement saying: "She knows that the Writers Guild East would have been there to protest her lack of solidarity, not only with her Guild writing staff, but all the striking members of the Writers Guild, of which she is a member."
However, Laura Mandel, a representative for DeGeneres, denied that the potential protesting stopped the New York tapings, saying, "We make changes all of the time. Our schedule is always fluid."
