George Clooney Joins United Nations

George Clooney has been named a United Nations (U.N.) "messenger of peace" by the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, for his efforts in supporting the refugees in Darfur.

Clooney, who has raised money for the refugees along with friends Don Cheadle and Brad Pitt through the "Not On Our Watch" charity, was "recognized for focusing public attention on crucial international political and social issues," U.N. spokeswoman Michele Montas said.

A "messengers of peace" is a person selected from people in the arts, who assist in bringing public awareness to plight of the U.N. work.

Clooney will receive his title on January 31, 2008.
