Legendary guitarist Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay claiming the British band ripped off his 2004 song ‘If I Could Fly’ for their hit track ‘Viva La Vida’. Listen to the two songs here.
The musician filed a copyright infringement suit on Thursday (December 4) in Los Angeles federal court claiming Coldplay’s song uses “substantial original portions” of his instrumental piece.
As part of the lawsuit, Satriani is seeking a jury trial along with damages and “any and all profits” from the song.
This is not the first claim against Coldplay stealing a melody for their hit single.
Earlier this year, New York band Creaky Boards posted a message on MySpace stating the band had ripped off one of their songs, saying frontman Chris Martin was reportedly spotted at one of their gigs, a claim Coldplay denies.
Listen to Coldplay and Joe Satriani’s songs below to compare.
