In a press conference on Tuesday night (January 22), Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne from the New York Police Department stated that a masseuse arrived at Ledger’s SoHo apartment for a scheduled appointment, and was let in by a housekeeper at around 2:45pm. The housekeeper called for Ledger, but there was no response from the actor.
The housekeeper found Ledger lying on the floor where he was curled up at the end of his bed, naked and face down, and immediately called 911. The responding paramedics finding him in full cardiac arrest upon arrival.
The attending officers were unsuccessful in their attempts to perform CPR at the 28-year-old’s apartment, and pronounced him dead at 3:45pm.
A police spokesperson had earlier confirmed that "there were some drugs found around the body – prescription-type drugs," however, Browne stated that no pills had been found "scattered" around the room, and that prescription sleeping medication and some other bottles had been recovered.
An NYPD rep also reportedly told TMZ.com that the death was accidental.
Reports suggested that Ledger was sub-letting the apartment from Mary-Kate Olsen, however, a representative for Olsen has confirmed that she had never owned or lived in the apartment.
The Aussie’s body showed no visible signs of trauma, according to authorities, and has been removed from the apartment by the City of New York Medical Examiner, with an autopsy scheduled for Wednesday morning (January 23).
