It’s a historic day for Californians! In November 2008 Proposition 8, a ballot measure that banned same-sex marriages in California, was passed in – but it was ruled unconstitutional Wednesday (August 4) by a federal judge, and the ban has been overturned. “I’m so grateful,” Ellen DeGeneres blogged, “for today’s decision.”
U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker overturned Prop 8 in San Francisco on Wednesday, prompting Hollywood’s A-lister to tweet their support and excitement. Ellen DeGeneres was also quick to post a celebrate on her blog:
“Today, California’s Proposition 8 was declared unconstitutional. When Prop 8 was passed two years ago, I said, “One day we will look back and realize how wrong this is.” Now, we’ve made a huge step forward. In today’s ruling, the court stated that Prop 8 “fails to advance any rational basis” for denying the right to marry, and the court is right. We’re all equal, and we should all have equal rights. I’m so grateful for today’s decision.”
• Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger: “This decision affirms the full legal protections and safeguards I believe everyone deserves.”
• Ellen DeGeneres: “Equality won!”
• Adam Levine: “The fact that there ever was a prop 8 is out of control. It’s archaic and backwards and stupid. And it’s hopefully gone forever.”
• Lance Bass: “Congrats on the overturning of Prop 8!!!!”
• Ricky Martin: ” YEAHHHHH!!!!! PROP8UNCONSTITUTIONAL MOVING FORWARD!!!!!!!!”
• Fran Drescher: “Congrats to CA for c-ing the light & rising above prejudice. u had me worried there! When Iowa is cooler than Cali, it’s time to recalibrate!”
• Kelly Osbourne: “so happy over the news on prop8 its about time!”
• Kim Kardashian: “Prop 8 was struck down! This news is amazing!!!! Its about time! Congrats to everyone!”
• Shanna Moakler: “Tonight we celebrate! EQUALITY and LOVE for all! This is so much bigger then [sic] marriage, it’s about wisdom, compassion and knowing we CAN be heard, action DOES make a difference!”
• Samantha Ronson: “Song Of The Day: Let’s Get Married- Jagged Edge.”
