Hugh Jackman: “Nothing Shameful” About Being Gay

April 23rd, 2009

Hunky Aussie actor Hugh Jackman is not gay – but says he would be the first to admit it if he was, as he believes “there isn’t anything shameful about it”.

The ‘Wolverine‘ star has been dogged by gay rumors throughout his career, and says that he has purposefully avoided talking about it in the past.

“I’d be happy to go and deny it, because I’m not,” Jackman explains, “but by denying it, I’m saying there is something shameful about it, and there isn’t anything shameful.”

Rumors about his sexual persuasion gathered strength after Jackman played flamboyantly gay singer-songwriter Peter Allen on Broadway, but the married father of two says he’s not bothered by it.

“The questions about sexuality I find more here in America than anywhere else, because it’s a big hang-up and defines what people think about themselves and others [here],” he says in this Sunday’s issue of Parade.

“It’s not a big issue in Australia.”
