Isaiah Washington Angry Over Grey’s Anatomy Promotion

May 9th, 2008

Former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Isaiah Washington has expressed his anger over an on-air promotion for the medical drama that uses his face and highlights a storyline involving his character, despite his termination from the show.

Washington’s contract was not renewed at the end of the last season after reported off-camera conflicts with cast members and his highly publicized use of the word "faggot" backstage at the Golden Globe Awards.

However, the actor’s face has popped up in a new promo for the show with Washington’s representative, Howard Bragman, issuing a statement regarding the matter.

"Isaiah has no plans to go back to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’," he told TMZ.com.  "That being said, we were more than a little surprised that ABC used his likeness in a promo for the show, and indeed advanced his character’s storyline.  Mr. Washington’s attorney has contacted the Screen Actors Guild and ABC as to the appropriateness of that action."

  1. Chuck Says:

So what’s the big deal? He WAS a character on that show. Mark Harmon left “St. Elsewhere” in the 80s, yet his character’s storyline was carried through for years and merged into other storylines until the character’s eventual death from AIDS. Ditto for several characters on “ER,” who have been used in storylines after the actors left the show. John Ritter died mid-season, yet his character and likeness were regularly referenced on “8 Simple Rules.” Ditto for Nicholas Colasanto on “Cheers.” McLean Stevenson’s character on “M*A*S*H” was killed off when he left the show, yet the character was referenced several times after that in subsequent years. Ditto for Denise Crosby’s character on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” — even before she returned as a different, albeit related, character. Isaiah Washington should get over it. His character was an integral part of “Grey’s Anatomy” for several years. It might still be if not for his behavior. It is natural that the existing characters and past storylines would occasionally refer to him.
