Jay Leno has laughed off reports that his prime time talk show is being canceled by NBC, telling the audience during the taping of of his show, “I don’t think there is any truth to the rumors.”
Rumors that The Jay Leno Show faced the chop have done the rounds since the host moved to the 10pm slot in September last year (2009), with the latest gossip saying Leno will move back to 11:30pm and replace Conan O’Brien.
“Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today,” NBC said in a statement Thursday (January 7). “As we have said all along, Jay’s show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance.”
The 59-year-old comedian made light of the reports during Thursday’s taping saying, “I don’t think there is any truth to the rumors. See, it’s always been my experience that NBC only cancels you when you’re in first place. So we are fine. We are OK.”
He added, “But Kev, if we did get canceled it will give us time to do some traveling. I understand that Fox is beautiful this time of year.”
