Jermain Dupri Starts Record Label With Deodorant

April 10th, 2008

Jermaine Dupri, music producer and partner of Janet Jackson, has launched a new record label in conjunction with a deodorant brand, in what appears to be the first blatantly commercially-aligned music label of its kind.

TAG Records, named after Proctor & Gambles TAG brand, will attempt to identify and development new musical talent, and will "make history in the music industry", says Dupri, who will be president of the company.

"This label is going to provide new artists with a chance of a lifetime," he says.

"New artists will receive ten times the typical marketing support – a first in the industry. I’m hand-selecting and molding these artists to make history in hip hop."

A press release states that "TAG Record’s artists will be supported with a multi-million dollar marketing effort that is unprecedented for any new artist, including television, print, radio, digital and event marketing."

The first signing will be announced in May, with the artist to be featured in "TAG brand advertising and marketing initiatives throughout 2008."

We have been talking about Dupri and TAG over at Highbrid Nation and what people don’t realize is that this is huge. The music industry is struggling and labels backed by major brands may indeed be the wave of the future.
