Joaquin Phoenix: I’m Getting Respect As A Rapper

February 4th, 2009

Joaquin Phoenix has reaffirmed his move into a hip-hop music career, revealing in a new interview, “There’s not a hoax.”

The actor-turned-rapper made his performance debut in Las Vegas recently, with poor footage of the show popping up on the internet.

“It sucks that, yeah, the footage is out there as like this incredibly bad sound, and you literally can’t hear what’s happening,” Phoenix told The Associated Press during promotion of his last movie ‘Two Lovers’. “It was much better in the club, and I don’t know who said that people were booing … because that was not happening.”

Speculation is rife that the career change, which is being filmed by Casey Affleck for a new documentary, is part of an elaborate joke, however, Phoenix claims those rumors are false.

“There’s not a hoax,” he explains.  “Might I be ridiculous? Might my career in music be laughable? Yeah, that’s possible, but that’s certainly not my intention.”

The 34-year-old says that following his Las Vegas performance, people were congratulating him on his show, which involved an unintentional fall from the front of the stage.

“My experience afterward was I had a lot of dudes come up and say, `We really respect you for doing it, putting yourself out there, and going with it.,’ he said.  “Because I think true hip-hop heads know that it’s hard, it’s going to be a hard transition, and people are going to be lining up just to make fun of me.”
