John Mayer issued a challenge to TMZ.com‘s Harvey Levin Wednesday (August 26), announcing that if the gossip site could produce the mugshot from his 2001 arrest, he would donate $25,000 to the charity of Levin’s choice. The singer has had to pay up.
It started with Mayer posting a message on Twitter regarding the arrest of Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump on Tuesday (August 25), on a two-year-old warrant for driving without a valid license.
“I was arrested for the same offense as Patrick Stump. (FTA),” Mayer wrote. “It’s the lamest answer to the question ‘why you in here?’ Challenge: if Harvey Levin at TMZ can produce my mugshot, I will donate 25k to the charity of his choice.”
Initially Levin and his team struggled to find the pic, turning to the public to uncover any information saying, “A puppy’s life depends on it,” as the money is being donated to animal groups.
However, TMZ produced the shot within 14 hours (with a little friendly rivalry from thesmokinggun.com) and Mayer made good on his word splitting the $25,000 between Pet Orphans and Ace of Hearts.
According to TMZ, the musician was arrested on May 26, 2001, for driving with a suspended license in Atlanta with the case being dismissed a month later.
