Jury Selection Completed In R. Kelly Case

May 16th, 2008

The jury in R. Kelly’s child pornography trial was finalized Thursday (May 15), with representation for the plaintiff and defense arguing about the racial makeup of the 12 jurors selected.

Kelly is facing charges relating to a video he allegedly recorded while having sex with a minor in 2002.

According to The Associated Press, the defense attorneys used challenges - where potential jurors are dismissed for impartiality or because they could be unfavorable to the case - to have several African American’s refused.

"I think they’re using these (challenges) to get rid of African Americans," said Kelly’s attorney Sam Adam Sr.

This drew a response from prosecutor Shauna Boliker, who said the defense had "used all six of their preemptories (preemptory challenges) on whites."

The Celebrity Truth asked Kelly’s rep, Allan Mayer, to comment on the case and was told, "Unfortunately, the judge issued an order… instructing me not [to] comment on any aspect of the case, including how R. Kelly is dealing with it all and how he views the future."
