It’s official – Katherine Heigl is leaving Grey’s Anatomy. Her absence will only be temporary, however, as the 30-year old actress is taking a break from the show in order film a new movie, the romantic comedy Life as We Know It.
“Katherine is taking time off to film a movie,” an ABC rep tells People magazine.
“The producers at Grey’s have accommodated past things like that before. It’s a cast of 13 and it is a true ensemble so the show is mindful [of other commitments].”
The rep would not confirm the exact length of time that Heigl will be on hiatus from the show, although EW.com is reporting that the break will last five episodes.
Fellow castmate Ellen Pompeo is also expected to take maternity leave shortly, as she’s due to give birth to her first child in October.
“Shonda [Rhimes] has had plans in place for a very long time [to cope with Heigl and Pompeo's hiatus],” the rep adds.
The show’s producers have also announced that three new characters will join the cast in recurring roles, played by Nora Zehetner, Robert Baker, and Jesse Williams.
