Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland will be released from jail on Monday (January 21), after serving 48 days for a drink driving charge.
According to prison officer John Balian, Sutherland, 41, was a "model prisoner" and created no hassles during his time in jail, carrying out his sentence by cleaning sheets, pillowcases and blankets on laundry duty.
"Throughout his stay, he never griped and never complained,’ Balian said.
“He never wanted preferential treatment from the get go, and we respect him for that."
The ‘24’ star, who pleaded no contest to the charges, was put behind bars on December 5, 2007 for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) and violating probation.
The court sentenced him to 30 days for the recent offence, and another 18 days for violating probation from a 2004 drink-driving arrest.
Authorities agreed to his request to serve his time in California’s Glendale’s jail, rather than in the overcrowded Los Angeles County jail. In exchange for this, Sutherland could not receive any time off his sentence for good behaviour, making him one of the first celebrities in recent months to have served out his entire prison sentence.
Recent celebrities who have enjoyed shorter stays than their sentences include Paris Hilton, Michelle Rodriguez, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan, who each served between 80 minutes (Lohan) and 23 days (Paris).
Sutherland will be looking forward to being reunited with his family and friends after missing out on Christmas, New Year and his December 21 birthday.
"He’ll be let out the front door just like everyone else. I have no idea who’ll be picking him up," Balian said.
