Rumors circulated on Monday (September 17) suggesting that a contract had been put out on Kevin Federline’s life, with FBI investigators reportedly deeming the situation "not credible".
Entertainment Tonight originally reported the story, claiming that they had "several reliable sources that say the FBI and LAPD are investigating legitimate leads on a contract hit on Kevin Federline’s life".
The story was picked up by gossip blogger Perez Hilton, who ran it under the defamatory heading, "Britney Trying To Kill Kevin". In the article, he alleged that he "wouldn’t put it past Britney or her camp!", which was then reported by several other gossip sites.
However, TMZ.com quoted a Los Angeles spokesperson for the FBI who said, "The information on the internet on these reports is not accurate. It did not come from the FBI at all."
When TheCelebrityTruth.com made enquiries, we were referred to Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for FBI press relations in Los Angeles, by Federline’s representative, Marilyn Lopez.
Eimiller told Usmagazine.com that, "We received information, which was not specific and uncorroborated, and because there was no federal jurisdiction, out of an abundance of caution, we shared the information with local authorities who pursued it further."
She went on to explain, "I’m not confirming the nature of the source, and any of the information contained in it. It is not credible. We looked into it."
Usmagazine.com also spoke with LAPD Public Information Officer Norma Eisenman who said, "There was an investigation in June, but there wasn’t enough evidence to substantiate the charges."
