Kiefer Sutherland was sentenced to 48 days in jail on Tuesday (October 9) after he pleaded no contest to a drunk driving charge, following his arrest in Los Angeles last month.
The star of TV’s ’24′ was arrested on September 25 for doing an illegal u-turn in Hollywood and was pulled over by police, when he was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol level exceeding Californian state limits.
This arrest violated Sutherland’s current five years probation stemming from a drunk driving charge in 2004.
Following Tuesday’s sentencing, the 40-year-old acotr agreed to serve 30 days for driving above the .08 legal limit, an additional 18 days for parole violation, and agreed to enrol in a mandatory 18-month alcohol education class – as well as weekly alcohol therapy sessions for six months, according to the court documents.
Blair Berk, Sutherland’s attorney, represented the actor in court and released a statement on behalf of the Emmy winner saying:
"I’m very disappointed in myself for the poor judgement I exhibited recently, and I’m deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers on ’24′ and at 20th Century Fox."
Officials at Fox also released a statement that read:
"Kiefer made clear to us at the time of his arrest that his first concern was the welfare of those he worked with, and that he intended to do whatever was necessary to prevent shutting down the show because of his situation.
"He told us that even if he had to sacrifice more time in custody in order to protect the show and the jobs of those who work with him, he would do so. From what occurred today, it is evident he is a man of his word."
Sutherland must begin serving his 18 days in jail on December 21, which coincides with the winter production break of his hit show, and has until July 1 next year to complete the remaining 30 days.
He will also be on probation for a further five years and faces fines when he is officially sentenced on December 21.
