LA Mayor: No More Donations For MJ Memorial

July 14th, 2009

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has called off a request, issued by his office in his absence last week, for donations to cover the costs of Michael Jackson’s memorial.

A website was set up asking for pledges to try and make back some of the estimated $1.4 million the city spent on the memorial service at the Staples Center on July 7.

“This is a world-class city, and we provide fire and police protection, period,” Villaraigosa said.  “The idea that we would charge the family for a funeral is nonsensical.”

AEG Live, owners of the Staples Center and promoters of Jackson’s scheduled tour, picked up the tab for the memorial service and the website has since been closed.
