Lindsay Lohan’s mother Dina has discussed her daughter’s saucy spread in New York Magazine, saying that she thought the nude shoot was "very tastefully done".

The photos, which published in Monday‘s edition of the magazine (February 18), showed the 21-year-old actress emulating the famous 1962 photo shoot of Marilyn Monroe by Bert Stern.

Lohan senior was approached by People.com to comment on her daughter‘s photo spread, which included several near-nude shots of the actress‘ breasts.

"It was very tastefully done," Mrs Lohan said.

"I respect the photographer as an artist, so I look at them artistically. For him to call Lindsay 46 years later and to say, can you recreate these photos, is an honor."

Lohan, 45, does not agree with critics who claim that the photos have more in common with Playboy than with art.

"I looked at it as art, and as Lindsay doing a character," she said.

"So I don’t look at them like it’s Playboy; she was being a character. So if you look at it that way, you can look at it as a mother."

She added that her daughter was very "overjoyed" to be asked to participate in the photoshoot, revealing, "Lindsay was very excited when she first got the phone call. Of course, we talked about how they would be done. Lindsay said, ‘Mommy, I’m never going to get this opportunity to do it again.’ She was very thankful she was asked."
