Michael Stipe, frontman for rock band R.E.M., has recorded a message to his fans following his announcement earlier this week revealing that he is gay, saying, "Now I recognise that for public figures to be very open about their sexuality helps some kid somewhere."
The singer posted the message on the band’s YouTube channel, stating, "My name is Michael Stipe and I’m here to make an announcement on behalf of R.E.M.. I want to express to any doubters that I’m here of my own volition."
Stipe told Spin magazine’s April issue that "It was super complicated for me in the ’80s. I was totally open with the band and my family and my friends, and certainly the people I was sleeping with. I thought it was pretty obvious."
The announcement made gossip column headlines around the world, prompting the singer to address the stories in the video.
