Mike Myers Addresses THAT Moment With Kanye West

June 20th, 2008

Mike Myers has spoken about the night he shared a stage with Kanye West on live television, during a telethon for Hurricane Katrina, when the rapper cause controversy with the comment, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

The controversial comments made headlines worldwide during “A Concert for Hurrican Relief” in September 2005.

Myers, who has given West a cameo in his latest movie ‘The Love Guru’, can now laugh about the moment, telling Moviefone, “I went to the Katrina telethon because I was very moved by the plight of the people in New Orleans and I wanted to make a difference. I think that the frustration that Kanye expressed was valid.”

Myers adds jokingly, “I just think you gotta tell a feller you’re gonna say it. Just tell a feller, would ya?”

Watch a video of that moment below.

A transcript of West’s comments are below:

“I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family, it says, ‘They’re looting.’ You see a white family, it says, ‘They’re looking for food.’ And, you know, it’s been five days [waiting for federal help] because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I’ve tried to turn away from the TV because it’s too hard to watch. I’ve even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I’m calling my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can give, and just to imagine if I was down there, and those are my people down there. So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help—with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way—and they’ve given them permission to go down and shoot us!

George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

I think Kayne is an idiot. You can tell he has no idea what he is speaking about. As for Mike Myers, are you agreeing with Kaynes, saying his "frustration is valid"? I hope not, I never portayed Myres as an idiot too. Who is Kayne to say our troops had been given permission to "go down and shoot us". Where is he getting his information, or what drugs is he on? And George Bush doesn't like black people? What does he mean by that? No sense to try to figure it out, it boils down to Kayne is a FREAK!!!!!!

  2. Candra is Dumb Says:

If you can't compose a proper sentence, don't call anyone dumb. In fact, you should probably just shut up all together.

  3. Dumb Person is Dumb Says:

His sentence seems fine, and you spelled his name wrong. Maybe YOU should just shut up altogether?

  11. Vince X Says:

all amarican presidents just do what the real amarican dictators tell them to do… and they dont care about most white and nearly all black ppl..

  12. Melanie Says:

Yes, because white people are so oppressed. He's gonna take your babies and your guns! Please. If Obama ever tried to do anything to hurt white people, he would be stopped by the predominantly white Congress. Your white privilege will remain intact, don't worry.

  13. TBA Says:

as a congressman none of you guys are right. the truth is that legistature is not black or white is green and dark. we get threats not from the average american but from those with power the ability to follow thru with their demands. Some of us fight back using our connections some just quit, others just play ball and just try to finish their term. when we get here our personal beliefs go ot the door, end of story. ( its not just new orleans this has been going on since fema came into play. Be More Attentive natural desasters happen all year round its just not televised. ie Mid West upper East coast . there is so much that our government can do to help you its just we are not allowed to advertise.

  15. AWA Says:

The only white privilege that I know of is our ability to educate ourselves and then have half our check donated to people like you. I am certain the welfare mentality will catch up to you at some point. Go ahead and enjoy your 24" rims and i'll enjoy my office job and 750 credit score. Have no fear, I'll die of old age having supported 100+ people I have only seen on the news telling us about how much of a tragedy it was when the shooting started, and you will die having never made anything of yourself and never contributing anything but entertainers to our society.

  16. nerd Says:

this was a long time ago but considering the recent events i thought i would respond.

    "go down and shoot us"

the federal government hired blackwater and other mercenary forces to try to restore "order" to the area. they ended up killing several innocent people and some cases are still being litigated. this is all documented so i suggest you check it out.

  17. AWA DEH Says:

Oh, come on now, don't hate. We all know you hate your office job.

  18. Joe Says:

Probably the most (and most likely only) honest post that will show up in this string of comments.

  22. tiredofthis Says:

Hear that everyone! Winning a Grammy or 12 now qualifies you as a musical genius! Thank God that has been put out there! For a while I thought Kanye won them because this country is full of fucking idiots just like him that could somehow relate to his music on a "fucking idiot wavelength"! We now know that they are all, in fact, musical geniuses!

  23. tiffani Says:

Do you know how to speak ENGLISH with proper GRAMMAR??? Or are you speaking lazy ebonics… ("barak obama dont care about…" should be, "Barack Obama doesn't care about…" and "He mixed" should be "He is mixed")

  24. TAK Says:

but you are doing the same thing…..

  25. Dina Says:

Mike Myers said that Kanye's frustration was valid not his words. Go back to bed, Chandra. There's nothing you can do for us out here.

  26. robin Says:

let us not forget all the buses that sat empty and under water because the people chose not to board them and get out, THEY decided to "ride out the storm". Then blamed the government for their own lack of judgment and then acted like animals when they didn't get the response they wanted.

  27. marsha Says:

Excellent post. I agree with you completely.

  28. This is Stupid Says:

  34. Elyse Says:

Wow..how off topic are you??? I love people like you. Even if what is being talked about has NOTHING to do with abortion, you'll find a way to bring it up anyway. If you think abortion is bad then…… a) Keep your pecker in your pants b) keep your legs crossed or even better yet c) DON'T HAVE ONE!! The rest of us would like to invite you to mind your own business. I won't tell you what to do….so please afford me the same courtesy and MYOB :)

  35. bob Says:

Oh, who the fuck cares about some little teen princess with a billion dollars. I mean, in the last 3 minutes, six children have died from malaria in the world.

    Jesus Christ.

  36. Elijha Says:

Everyone shut up, and just live your lives…. None of this matters anyways.

  37. bec Says:

It's not that off topic…the original quote was "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Then someone said "Barack Obama doesn't care about white people." So I said, "Barack Obama doesn't care about human beings at all." It's the only truthful statement out of the 3. He even voted AGAINST the "Born Alive Protection Act" that protects innocent babies that have a such a great will to live that they SURVIVED an abortion. He is a sick man, and I pray to God that he does not win in 2012.

  38. robin Says:

then why are you here reading it??

  39. Cynthia Says:

You are uneducated and ignorant. No book smarts, no street smarts. Let me guess, you come from a small hick town and have rarely left your county! Educate yourself and learn that words like yours are like human waste spewing from your mouth. I'm a "white girl" from a small town in Texas who has served six years in service to my country and currently holds a degree in foreign language, a degree in arts, and a degree in business. I am offended by your words. You are part of the reason that people assume that every small town white person is a racist!

  40. Michelle Says:

Seriously, you can actually see that Kanye believes what he is saying is smart and well thought through. Just by saying that you are a well thought-out person, etc… doesn't mean you are. Celebrities need to keep there mouths SHUT when it comes to politics! Somehow these very talented musicians, actors, actresses and athletes believe that because they are popular for their talent that they somehow get a platform for announcing their opinions….LIKE WE CARE!!!! Stick to entertainment and do what you do best. Stay out of the political scene because you will loose fans very quickly…your stupidity takes away from the fantasy and entertainment value that you once brought to the stage!

  46. THEAUTOBOT Says:

kayne has used a slew of ghost writers…. lyrical genius? not a chance….heds a bumb fuck

  47. wakegrrl Says:

The best comment I've read so far. What Kanye did was rude, but seriously, it does come down to the world being a big place, and its issues even bigger.

  49. Lakin Says:

Okay thats it. Enough is enough. Heres what I think.
Kanye West was not thinking clearly when he said what he said. I think he meant that George Bush does not care about the people affected in the Katrina disaster. For the people talking about how he needs to be shot, what the hell is wrong with you? Do you think your any better than him?
In other news shut the HELL up about abortion, please. Our president supports it as he should. Would you rather it be illegal so girls can go back to shoving clothes hangers in themselves and getting back alley abortions? So girls can get raped and not want to carry a rapist's child. It doesn't matter to them what your opinion is and they will find a more brutal way to abort their child if they can't get one at a clinic. And you mentioned adoption, I agree, but a lot of people just don't want to be pregnant period and also if all aborted babies were born, imagine how many would have to live in foster care and live a hard, miserable life. Imagine how many drugged out moms would give birth to a child born addicted to cocaine. Think about what goes through other peoples heads because not everyone shares your opinion.
Also, anyone that doesn't think Kanye is a talent either hates rap or does not have taste. I will tell you right now, he is one of the few rappers that talks about important things. He talks about his mom, about having to drop out for his career, about his grandmother being sick, and about Jesus. If you aren't hearing that then listen to some of his less popular songs.

And on the real issue, it has been resolved.

In November, 2010, Kanye West, in a taped interview with Matt Lauer for the Today Show, West expressed regret for his criticism of Bush. "I would tell George Bush in my moment of frustration, I didn't have the grounds to call him a racist," he told Lauer. "I believe that in a situation of high emotion like that we as human beings don't always choose the right words." The following day, Bush reacted to the apology in a live interview with Lauer saying he appreciated the rapper's remorse. "I'm not a hater," Bush said. "I don't hate Kanye West. I was talking about an environment in which people were willing to say things that hurt. Nobody wants to be called a racist if in your heart you believe in equality of races."

I don't think anyone who rips off existing music left, right and centre and then chucks a few words over the top without even doing something new with the samples could possibly be called a musical genius. That's just lazy. The man is not a musician, he's not even a poet. Him winning 12 grammy awards only proves to me how little these awards really mean these days.
