Perez Hilton Discusses Record Company Lawsuit

April 1st, 2008

Gossip blogger Perez Hilton has posted a message on his website regarding a lawsuit brought against him by music giant Sony BMG, who are suing the blogger for streaming several unreleased and unauthorized Britney Spears songs on his website.

Prior to the release of Spears’ album ‘Blackout’, several tracks claiming to be demo recordings of the popstar were circulating on the web, and Hilton posted several of them on his website for streaming - however, he never made them available for download.

"When these songs first leaked, there was a lot of doubt as to whether they were Britney or a fake. Plus, we never made any music downloadable," Hilton says.

"Every time we saw a take-down notice from the R.I.A.A., we complied immediately. By the way, no one at Sony BMG ever contacted us about Britney."

Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavendiera, is now refusing to support any Sony BMG artists on his site.

"Why should we help the company [that is] suing us make money???? Especially when their lawsuit is personal."

The writer claims his innocence by saying, "Also, every song we posted - not knowing if it was or wasn’t an authentic Spears song - had already been all over the internet and fansites, yet PerezHilton.com is the only entity being sued by Sony BMG."

The suit is still pending, with Hilton writing, "What’s even worse are the outrageous demands Sony BMG are making in order to get them to settle this lawsuit and have this case dropped… Sony BMG may win this battle, but at the end of the day we will be the ones laughing."
