Red Hot Chili Peppers Suing TV Network

November 19th, 2007

Rock band the Red Hot Chili Peppers are suing American television network Showtime over use of the name ‘Californication’, after the network used their 1999 album title as the name for David Duchovny’s latest show.

The Chili Peppers ‘Californication’ album spawned the chart-toppings hits ‘Scar Tissue’, ‘Otherside’ and the title track, and peaked at number three on the US Billboard charts.

Billboard.com
reports that a suit was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday (November 19), with lead singer and songwriter Anthony Kiedis saying, "’Californication’ is the signature CD, video and song of the band’s career. For some tv show to come along and steal our identity is not right."

The band has requested that Showtime Networks and defendants Twilight Time Films, Aggressive Mediocrity and Tom Kapinos cease using the name and hand over all profits made as a result of using the name.

No response has been made yet by the defending parties.
