I was lucky enough to be at the gala screening of the much anticipated George Clooney/Grant Heslov movie, The Men Who Stare at Goats. This witty film has a stellar cast consisting of Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges and several scene-stealing goats.
The movie doesn’t focus on war, “…it’s really about a guy whose life has fallen apart and he goes on a journey to find himself,” said Heslov . It is surprising to think that this movie is based more on fact than fiction, especially when you meet Clooney`s character Lyn Cassady, a retired solider from the army`s First Earth Battalion. The battalion is actually a group of Jedi soldiers, lead by Bridge`s character Bill Django, who after an epiphany on the battlefield, advocates using peaceful methods- such as psychic abilities- to win wars.
While I wasn’t expecting to take this movie seriously, it ended up being quite thought-provoking, even with all the hilarious one-liners. The movie ended with a standing ovation, and a new appreciation of goats.
As Clooney said at a TIFF press conference, “…you can’t go wrong working on good projects.”
