Robin Williams’ Surprise $10 Gig In Sydney, Australia

February 11th, 2010

Robin Williams - Warner BrosRobin Williams may be one the most famous comedians in the world, but that didn’t stop him from surprising a small Sydney audience of 200 people – who had each paid just $10 entry – with a spontaneous stand-up routineĀ  on Tuesday night (February 9).

Robin Williams - Warner BrosThe actor is in Sydney recording his voiceover for George Miller’s new animated feature, Happy Feet II.

He has been working on the film with Australian comedian Gary Eck, who is co-writing and co-directing the sequel at Fox Studios in Sydney.

Williams and co-star Elijah Wood finished a day at the recording studio with Eck and asked him out to dinner – but Eck couldn’t join them because he had a gig.

So, they took three other Los Angeles-based voice actors along to Eck’s show at the Sugarmill, in Sydney’s Kings Cross, on the strict proviso that Williams would remain anonymous.

However, Eck tells a Sydney newspaper that what followed “was the best night of comedy I’ve ever experienced”.

“It was such an organic evening with one surprise after another,” Eck says. “Everyone had a brilliant time.”

It seems that after he was discovered in the room, Williams was prompted to get up on stage.

According to the paper, he performed a 30-minute improv show – which ended, naturally, in a standing ovation.
