It seems that all people wanted for Christmas was to go to the movies, as the US box office enjoyed it’s biggest weekend ever with a mammoth $278 million dollars worth of ticket sales over the three day weekend! It’s was a battle to the finish line but Avatar came out on top, but which one was the biggest disappointment?
A total of 37.3 million tickets were sold over the holiday period, making it the largest cinema going weekend since data started officially being collated in 1985, with studio executives reporting that it’s the first time that three movies have all grossed over $50 million dollars.
James Cameron’s flick didn’t look like it could beat Sherlock Holmes to the number one spot, however, a resurgence on Saturday saw the techno film make another $75 million, taking it’s worldwide gross to $617 million (what was that Perez Hilton – oh, and this?).
The Guy Ritchie action flick, which stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, debuted with a solid $66 million (BTW you MUST see it… along with Avatar!), while Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel made $50.2 million.
Nine, the much-hyped musical starring Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Fergie, Daniel Day Lewis, Penélope Cruz, Sophia Lauren and more, was the only disappointment of the Christmas long weekend, taking in only $5.5 million worth of ticket sales.
