Shrek Blitzes MacGruber At US Box Office

May 22nd, 2010

Shrek - DreamworksIt’s a battle of the superhero’s at the US box office this weekend, with Shrek doing battle against Iron Man, Robin Hood and MacGruber to win the hearts (and finances) of cinema goers.

According to Exhibitor Relations, Shrek looks set to take approximately $72 million across the weekend, down significantly on the opening numbers of Shrek The Third in 2007, which made  $121.6 million.

Shrek - DreamworksIron Man 2 still has enough firepower with $27 million to withstand Russell Crowe’s Robin Hood at $18 million, but unfortunately it’s MacGruber that’s been left for dead.

The Saturday Night Live skit turned full length feature looks set to make only make $4 million by weekend’s end, coming in a disappointing sixth in the weekend’s tally.

Final figures will be released Monday morning.

I saw MacGruber today, and I hope it manages to do well at the box office. The movie is hilarious, gross and disturbing, and thoroughly satisfying.
