There’s a few people attempting to drag in Travolta’s religion into the story, and say the son was autistic and should be given psychiatric medication. The problem with such attacks is they raise the question of “how do you test for mental illness?” Looking at the website, http://www.autismspeaks.org.uk/what_causes_autism.html, it says “There are currently no biological tests to confirm a diagnosis of autism. Identification of the condition is at present based solely on observed behaviours.” The site also says, “Finding the cause (or causes) of autism is one of the most challenging areas of medical science. The absence of a clear understanding about what causes autism makes finding effective therapies very difficult.” So as a parent, I would think twice before giving my child a drug which is not based on addressing a known cause. My answer would be to look deeper. In Jett’s case, he was given medication for seizures until they lost effectiveness. Are there any drugs to treat Autism? The answer is no. But symptoms of autism such as seizures, are treated with drugs. Did the Travolta’s use medication for seizures? Yes. So what’s all the controversy about? Some people like to hit people when they’re down I guess. I just pray for the Travoltas that they get through this all right, no matter what religion they are.
