Tom Cruise’s Company Inks Deal With Writers Guild

January 7th, 2008

Tom Cruise’s company, United Artists, has signed a deal with the Writers Guild of America (WGA), who will allow their members to work with Cruise and his producing partner, Paula Wagner, during the current writers strike – despite United Artist’s parent company expressing their disapproval.

In a statement released on Monday (January 7), President of the WGA, Patric M. Verrone said, "United Artists has lived up to it’s name. UA and the Writers Guild came together and negotiated seriously. The end result is that we have a deal that will put people back to work."

However, not everyone is pleased with the agreement, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), a major shareholder in United Artists Entertainment, releasing their own statement:

"Regarding United Artists Films seeking an interim agreement with the Writers Guild of America (WGA): Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) understands the desire of United Artists to resume business activities, but respectfully disagrees with its decision to sign an interim agreement with the WGA.

"MGM remains committed to working with AMPTP member companies to reach a fair and reasonable agreement with the WGA that positions everyone in our industry for success in a rapidly changing marketplace."
