Wyclef Jean Pleads With Nation To Stop Violence

March 31st, 2008

Musician Wyclef Jean has teamed up with the United Nations in a radio advertisement to ask Haitians to stop the escalating violence in their country, saying "there can be no excuse for doing so".

Jean, one time member of rap group The Fugees, is respected by the Haitians, according to Fred Blaise, a spokesman for the U.N.

"They would be more likely to be receptive to Wyclef’s message because they are all proud of him," Blaise told Reuters.

"All kinds of Haitians, the good guys as well as the bad guys. [They] have a lot of appreciation for Wyclef for what he represents as a Haitian."

The commercials feature Jean asking, "If you love Wyclef, that means you love Haiti. So you should not be raping women, kidnapping people and children, because there can be no excuse for doing so. I reject these evil practices."
